First $1 million find for ‘Antiques Roadshow’

Woman inherited carved jade from her father, who was stationed in China

NEW YORK - A woman who inherited some Chinese carved jade from her father has scored the first $1 million appraisal from experts on the U.S. television program "Antiques Roadshow," the producers said on Monday.

In a record for the show, four pieces of Chinese carved jade and celadon from the Chien Lung Dynasty (1736-1795), including a large bowl crafted for the Emperor, were given a conservative auction estimate of up to $1.07 million. "For 13 years, we've been hoping to feature a million-dollar appraisal on 'Antiques Roadshow;' it's been our 'Great White Whale,'" executive producer Marsha Bemko said.

DTV Conversion Celebrated at WGVU

by Sue Merrell | The Grand Rapids Press

GRAND RAPIDS -- We have lift off!

Friday's national switch from analog to digital television was celebrated with all the pomp of a rocket launch at the Meijer Public Broadcast Center in downtown Grand Rapids.

Dignitaries, photographers and reporters jammed into the WGVU-TV control room for a live broadcast counting down the final seven minutes of the station's analog signal. At 10 a.m., retail magnate Fred Meijer, a major supporter of public broadcasting, pushed the button to shut off power to analog Channel 52. Grand Valley State University President Emeritus Arend D. Lubbers, who welcomed viewers when the station started broadcasting in 1972, turned off the power to Channel 35.

"I thought it would hurt, but it didn't," Lubbers quipped. As the analog monitors in the room went gray, applause could be heard outside the door.

President Obama: “The world is a better place” with Sesame Street

The stars were out Wednesday night, May 27, at a special benefit gala to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the most beloved street in the world — Sesame Street — and President Barack Obama sent hearty congratulations via a surprise video message.

“I'm pleased to join all of you in supporting and celebrating this program, as someone who remembers fondly watching Sesame Street with my younger sister and as a parent of two girls who learned a great deal while spending time with Elmo and Big Bird and all of their pals,” President Obama said.

“There are many adults who could stand to learn again the lessons that Sesame Street offers: lessons of compassion, and kindness and respect for our differences. The world is a better place for the world you create on Sesame Street — a world that enriches our children's minds and hearts each and every day,” he continued.
